Easter is here – which means an extended weekend for us Finns. But before that, I’d like to tell you about two great cafés and a surprise involving boating.
Friday was a museum day again, as my mom and I visited the Akseli Gallen-Kallela museum in Espoo. Right beside the museum is a gorgeous café with the most beautiful view I have seen for a while. Unfortunately we did not stop there but I will do so very soon.
If you ever visit Helsinki, make sure you look out for these concrete turtles. They are traffic obstacles which mark pedestrinized areas – before, these areas were marked with ugly concrete roadblocks. Don’t you think the turtles are a better idea? You can find them around the city and in playgrounds as well. Hubby and I went out Friday evening and I just had to pose on one of these. See how wintry it still is here!
On Saturday Helsinki was filled with food trucks and tents as Streat Helsinki came to town. As a foodie, I try not to miss these events and the possibility of trying something new.
On Palm Sunday, children go door to door dressed as witches and give out colourful, decorated catkin branches in exchange for sweets. I had bought a whole lot of sweets to give but only my goddaughter and her sister came. I was very happy for their visit though and got four branches from them. They of course got some Easter eggs and other goodies.
Then, for this week’s surprise. In the past two weeks, hubby and I have been to see three sailing boats that are on sale. I love our motorboat, as it’s beautiful and fast, but it’s just too small to make overnight trips with.
I have never been a fan of sailing but I have decided to give it another chance this summer as hubby wanted to sail from the very beginning. I am such a fastpaced person that making our way to our destination for hours on end seems like a gruelling affair. Especially since Finnish summer is usually quite cold. But – who knows – I cannot rule out sailing till I try it again properly.
So… the big news is that we have bought a sailing boat! The sea is still icy, so it will take some time until we actually get to take it out as it’s not even on the water yet. But that won’t stop me from thinking about pillows and throws for the boat. To tell the truth, I am quite terrified of what awaits us but I guess it’s good to get out of your comfort zone.
This week’s best celebration was our 20th wedding anniversary. My family and I ate lots of sushi and cake to celebrate. The cake was from a little café near my office, I’ve been wanting to try out since I spotted it in the neighbourhood.
They specialize in American style cakes and cupcakes and have all kinds of other things to tempt you with as well.
The place is in the Kruununhaka neighbourhood and is called Frangipani.
As you are reading this, I am on my way to Tallinn with hubby. Am I the only person who makes holiday plans around to the restaurants I want to visit?
With these cakes from Frangipani, I wish you and yours a Happy Easter!
How was your week? Do you have any plans for Easter?
xx
Congratulations on your wedding anniversary, 20 years is a milestone and deserves a celebration. And of the boating affair, may you have all the fun cruising about. Do invite me for a cocktail on one of your sailing and sunny days:-). Love reading your posts Suvi, they are delightful!

It feels incredible that 20 years has passed, hehe! Let’s see about the cocktail after we learn how to sail, I am now reading a book on it and it sounds very difficult… Yikes.. I do hope for sunny days 😊

Happy Easter Suvi! Those cakes look delicious. Great news about the yacht, what make and size is it? Enjoy Tallinn, too!

Thank you so much Marion! The boat is 31 feet and it’s a Finnish brand called Sunwind. Pictures will follow once we start the process to lower it into the water 😊 Scary! Did you have a boat too?

That’s great Suvi! No, we don’t have a yacht ourselves but our sons learnt on Toppers and Lasers which we had. I don’t like dinghies though, too close to the water for me. Husband has sailed yachts for a long time and raced J24s, older son was a member of the university yacht club. Last summer after visiting Espoo he sailed from Sicily to Naples on a friend’s boat that is being brought back to England . This summer he’s hoping to sail it from near Rome to the South of France over three weeks with his friends, but he’s still planning on fitting at least a week in Finland too, as we all love it so much!
